Why Are There So Many Different Dermal Fillers? What’s the Difference?

Our Nurse holding 3 different types of filler at Collab Medspa

If you’ve ever looked into dermal filler, you’ve probably felt a little overwhelmed by the choices. Juvederm, Restylane, Evolysse — and within each of those brands, there are still more options to sort through. It’s a lot.

But there’s a good reason for all this variety. Different areas of your face have different needs, and every client who walks through our door has a different face, different goals, and a different vision of what looks beautiful to them. At Collab Medspa, we don’t believe in a one-filler-fits-all approach. We choose products based on your face and the result you’re after.

Different Fillers Do Different Jobs

Think about the difference between your cheeks and your lips. Your cheeks provide structure to your face, so when we add filler there, we often need something firmer that can support and lift. Your lips, on the other hand, are soft and constantly in motion — smiling, speaking, eating, laughing — so lip filler needs to move naturally with you.

That difference alone explains a lot of why so many filler types exist. It was never just about picking a brand. We’re looking at how firm or soft a product is, where it’s going, how that area of the face moves, and what the final result should look like.

Even Lip Filler Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Someone might call and simply say, “I want lip filler.” But what does that really mean? One client loves her lip size already and just wants to soften fine lines. Another wants a bit more shape and structure. Someone else is after noticeably fuller, plumper lips. Those are three completely different goals, and they call for different products.

We might reach for Juvederm Volbella when someone wants very little added volume but needs those fine lines addressed. Restylane Kysse tends to come up when we want more structure while still keeping things looking natural. And Juvederm Ultra or Evolysse Smooth often make sense when a client is after a fuller, plumper look.

That’s why we keep so many different fillers on hand – our injector needs options. We’re not interested in shaping your lips around whatever product happens to be in stock. We want to understand what you want, and then choose the product that gets you there.

Cheeks and Jawlines Need Something Different

When we move to areas like the cheeks or jawline, the goals shift. These areas typically call for more structure and support. Juvederm Voluma has long been a go-to when we want a strong, defined cheek or jawline, and newer Evolysse products have only expanded what our injector has to work with.

But some of the most interesting results don’t come from choosing just one filler at all.

Why We Sometimes Layer Different Fillers

This is where injecting becomes as much art as science. A gentleman recently came in wanting a stronger jawline, and our nurse Randi put together a treatment plan that honestly made me curious enough to ask her about it — I hadn’t seen a jawline approached quite that way before.

Her plan involved layering products: one filler where she needed stability and support, and a softer one in areas where she wanted volume without the face looking hard or unnatural. The result was fantastic, and it was a good reminder that a skilled injector isn’t just filling in an area — she’s reading the whole face, thinking about shape, curves, symmetry, movement, and balance all at once.

Natural-Looking Filler Starts With a Conversation

One of the most common things we hear at Collab Medspa is, “I don’t want to look fake.” We get it. Filler has taken a lot of heat in recent years, but the extreme results you see online aren’t representative of what thoughtful treatment actually looks like.

Natural results start with an in-depth consultation. Before we even talk about specific products, we want to understand what bothers you and what you’re hoping to see when you look in the mirror. From there, our nurse and the client build a treatment plan together. Sometimes that plan feels like a lot all at once, so we’ll break it into smaller steps — starting with whatever concern matters most to you — and build from there over time.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything in One Appointment

Dermal filler can create an immediate change, but immediate doesn’t mean final. There’s a healing and settling period afterward, and sometimes we intentionally spread treatment across more than one visit. Layering over time lets us see how your face responds, so we can adjust the next appointment based on what we’re seeing and what you want.

Maybe we add a little more here, tweak something there — or maybe we decide you already have exactly what you need. For a lot of clients, this gradual approach is what actually produces a natural, balanced result, rather than trying to cram every change into a single sitting.

Sometimes the Right Answer Isn’t More Filler

A good consultation also means an honest conversation about what filler can and can’t do. One woman came to us very worried about looking fake and brought along an AI-generated image of what she wanted to look like. The image itself looked quite different from her natural features.

Rather than brushing it aside, Randi used it as a starting point for conversation — what did she like about the picture, which parts were achievable with filler or other treatments, and which would actually require surgery. In this case, achieving everything in that image would have meant a facelift. That’s useful information either way: if a facelift is somewhere in her future plans, we can talk about that; if surgery isn’t on the table, we can talk about how to move closer to her goal through other means. Our job was never to promise filler can do everything — it’s to help you understand your real options.

How Do You Choose a Good Filler Injector?

Honestly, the number of filler brands a medspa carries matters less than the person deciding how to use them. Look for someone who listens — who asks what you like rather than telling you what you need based on their own personal standards of beauty.

A good injector should be able to spot facial asymmetry and explain how they’d approach balancing it. They should set realistic expectations and be able to explain why they’re recommending one product over another. And maybe most importantly, they should be comfortable telling you no — especially when someone’s asking for a large, multi-syringe treatment. More filler isn’t automatically the better answer. Your treatment plan should be built with you, not handed down for you.

Why Does Collab Medspa Carry So Many Fillers?

Honestly, it comes down to wanting options. There are many filler brands out there, and each one offers several products that behave differently and serve different purposes. Injectors also develop their own preferences based on training, technique, and the results they’ve seen firsthand.

I work closely with Randi to make sure she has access to what she needs, so she can choose fillers based on each client’s anatomy and goals instead of forcing one product to do a job it wasn’t made for. More options also means more room to layer — structure here, softness there, volume exactly where it’s needed. The goal was never to use as many fillers as possible. It’s to have the right one on hand when it counts.

Not Sure Which Filler You Need? That’s Okay.

You don’t need to walk in already knowing the difference between every Juvederm, Restylane, or Evolysse product — that’s our job. You don’t even need to know which filler you want.

Just come in knowing what you’d like to change. Tell us what bothers you, show us pictures if that helps, ask questions, and tell us what you don’t want too. From there, we’ll talk through your options and build a plan together.

Because at Collab Medspa, choosing a filler was never about following a trend or picking a popular name. It’s about finding the right tool to create a result that still looks like you.
