If you’ve been dealing with brown spots, uneven skin tone, or stubborn patches of discoloration, you’ve probably wondered whether IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is the answer. The truth is — it depends on what’s actually going on with your skin.
At Collab Medspa, one of the questions we hear almost every day is some version of: “Can IPL fix my melasma?” And honestly, we love this question, because the answer opens up a really important conversation about what’s actually causing your pigmentation and what will genuinely help.
Spoiler: IPL is amazing — just not always for melasma.
Melasma and Hyperpigmentation Aren’t the Same Thing
This is where a lot of confusion starts, and it’s completely understandable. Both look like darker patches on your skin. But they have very different causes, and that matters a lot when it comes to treatment.
Hyperpigmentation is a broad term for skin that’s darkened due to sun exposure, aging, acne, or inflammation. A lot of people have this, and IPL often does a beautiful job treating it.
Melasma is a different animal. It’s a chronic condition where your skin overproduces pigment, often triggered by hormones, pregnancy, birth control, genetics, heat, or sun exposure. It tends to show up as symmetrical patches — usually on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, upper lip, or chin.
Because melasma behaves so differently from regular sun damage, it needs a different approach entirely.
Why We Skip IPL for Melasma
We know it can feel surprising when we say this, especially if a friend had great IPL results. But here’s the thing: even though IPL can break up surface pigment, it also generates heat in the skin — and heat is one of melasma’s biggest triggers. So instead of clearing things up, IPL can actually make melasma worse.
When there are safer, more effective options available, it just doesn’t make sense to take that risk. Our job isn’t to sell you a treatment — it’s to recommend the one that actually works for your skin.
That’s why every single IPL consultation at Collab Medspa starts with a thorough skin assessment. What worked for your friend might not be right for you, and we want to make sure we get it right.
When IPL Is Absolutely the Right Call
Here’s what we don’t want you to take away from this: IPL is still one of our favorite treatments. For the right candidate, it’s genuinely incredible.
Sun damage, age spots, freckles, certain types of hyperpigmentation — IPL can deliver results that feel almost magical.
We had a patient who came in because a dark spot on his forehead was really bothering him. We recommended a series of three IPL treatments. After his first one, he came back a little discouraged — he couldn’t see any change and thought maybe it hadn’t worked.
We asked him to be patient.
A few days later, we checked in with him. The spot had turned dark and flaky, and when he dried off after a shower — it just lifted away. Gone.
Now he comes in every few months for a quick maintenance treatment, and that spot has never come back. Stories like his are exactly why we love what we do.
So What Does Work for Melasma?
When someone comes to us with melasma, we build a customized plan rather than defaulting to one treatment. Everyone’s skin is different, and melasma especially responds better to a thoughtful combination approach.
One of our go-to options is a series of VI Peels — these are specifically formulated to target pigmentation, sun damage, and melasma. For patients who’d rather skip the peeling process and downtime, we often recommend microneedling or PRP microneedling instead.
We also incorporate professional brightening products — like the iS Clinical Brightening Complex — to help suppress pigment between treatments and support your skin’s overall health.
This kind of layered approach lets us make real progress on melasma while keeping the risk of flare-ups low.
A Patient Story We Love to Tell
One of our most memorable patients came to us after years of putting herself last while raising her kids. She was finally ready to focus on herself — and her skin showed the years of sun, stress, and hormonal changes.
She had an olive skin tone, noticeable melasma, and accumulated sun damage. IPL wasn’t the right fit for her. Instead, we built her a personalized plan: VI Peels, microneedling treatments, the iS Clinical Brightening Complex, and daily sunscreen.
Nine months later? Her skin looked dramatically brighter and healthier. But more than that — she felt like herself again. That kind of confidence is what we’re really in the business of restoring.
Why the Consultation Actually Matters
A quick note on this, because we know it can feel like an extra step: the consultation isn’t just a formality. It’s genuinely where the magic starts.
We look at your medical history, any recent health changes, medications, hormones, your current skincare routine, and what you’re hoping to achieve. All of that shapes our recommendations.
We also pay close attention to skin tone. Generally speaking, darker or olive skin tones aren’t ideal candidates for IPL — and while some providers offer extremely low settings as a workaround, we’ve found those settings often just reduce effectiveness without eliminating the risk. There are better options for those skin types, and we’ll always steer you toward them.
The Mistakes We See Most Often
Over the years, we’ve noticed a few patterns that make melasma harder to manage — and we want to help you avoid them.
Skipping sunscreen is the big one. Sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially here in Arizona. Even the most perfectly designed treatment plan will struggle if your skin isn’t protected every single day.
Heat exposure is another sneaky trigger. Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms — even prolonged time in the heat — can cause melasma to flare, even when you’re wearing sunscreen. It’s something a lot of people don’t realize.
And then there’s the social media product trap. We see this constantly: someone tries a trending brightening product for two weeks, doesn’t see results, moves on to the next one, and the cycle continues. A lot of those viral products aren’t designed for melasma specifically, and some can actually irritate the skin and make things worse.
Consistent, simple skincare wins almost every time over the constant-switching approach.
Our Honest Advice If You’re Struggling with Melasma
Keep it simple. Stay consistent. Be patient.
Melasma doesn’t have a permanent cure, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it forever. It’s a chronic condition that often improves with age and can even fade significantly after menopause. In the meantime, the right combination of professional treatments, medical-grade skincare, and daily sun protection can make a huge difference.
You don’t have to figure this out on your own.
