What Is a Medspa? Understanding the Difference Between a Medspa, Traditional Spa and a Dermatology Clinic

If you’ve typed “what is a medspa?” into Google, you’re in good company. Most people have a pretty clear picture of what happens at a day spa, and they know what a dermatologist does. But a medical spa tends to live in the gray area between the two, and that gray area is exactly where a lot of confusion — and a lot of good questions — comes from.

At Collab Medspa, we like to think we live in that gray area on purpose. We’ve built a practice that pairs the comfort of a spa with real, medical-grade skin treatments, and we take the time to actually get to know you and your skin before we ever suggest a plan.

So, What Is a Medspa?

A medical spa, or medspa, is a practice that offers advanced aesthetic treatments under medical supervision. Unlike a traditional spa, the treatments here require specialized training, licensing, insurance, and oversight from a medical director — because they’re doing more than helping you unwind for an hour.

Think:

  • Microneedling
  • Chemical peels
  • Laser treatments
  • Botox and Fillers
  • Acne treatments like AviClear
  • Medical-grade skincare

These are treatments built to change your skin, not just pamper it for a moment — tackling things like acne, sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, and uneven texture.

Medspa vs. Traditional Spa

Traditional spas are wonderful for what they are. Massages, facials, body treatments — all the things that help you feel refreshed and taken care of. There’s real value in that, and we don’t take it for granted. We offer a lot of these services too; we live for a good massage! We just believe relaxation shouldn’t be the only thing we offer.

Walk into Collab Medspa and you’ll still get the soft music, the warm treatment beds, the private rooms — even our facial pods, more on those in a bit. So no, we haven’t given up on comfort.

What sets us apart is that alongside all of that, we’re also delivering treatments that create real, lasting change in your skin. We’re not just trying to help you relax for an hour — we’re trying to help you love your skin for years.

Medspa vs. Dermatology Clinic

Dermatologists are essential. They’re highly trained physicians who diagnose and treat medical skin conditions, and plenty of people are well served by that care. We’re not here to argue otherwise.

It’s also worth saying: a lot of dermatology offices offer medspa services now too, so on paper, we often provide many of the same treatments they do. The difference shows up the moment you walk in the door.

Your Environment Reflects How You Feel

Derm offices tend to feel like what they are — medical, clinical, efficient. That’s not a knock, it’s just the nature of a doctor’s office. We wanted Collab Medspa to feel different from the second you sit down. Soft music, comfortable esthetic beds, a space that’s genuinely quiet and unhurried. And then there are our facial pods, which are honestly one of the things clients talk about most — heated, with a gentle vibration and a zero-gravity body position that takes the pressure off your back and hips while you’re being treated. Most medspas don’t have anything like them, let alone a dermatologist’s office.

So it’s not just about which treatments we offer. It’s about what it feels like to receive them.

What we offer beyond that is a different kind of relationship, too.

Every consultation at Collab Medspa is free, and you are not limited to one! We encourage our clients to schedule one anytime they want to talk more about their skin concerns. Before we recommend anything, we want to actually understand what’s going on with you. That means asking questions like:

  • How do you feel about your skin right now?
  • What have you already tried?
  • What are you actually hoping to see change?
  • What kind of plan would feel doable for you?

This isn’t a philosophy we picked up from a business book. It came from personal experience.

Before I opened Collab Medspa, I dealt with my own acne for years. I remember sitting in a dermatologist’s office for what felt like three minutes, walking out with a prescription, and having no real understanding of why my skin kept doing what it was doing. I wasn’t looking for a quick fix — I was looking for someone to explain it to me.

That’s the gap we built this practice to fill. Nobody should leave an appointment here feeling rushed or unheard.

Sometimes, Less Really Is More

One story sticks with our team as a reminder of why listening comes first.

A client came to us wanting to start AviClear for her acne. Her skin was extremely dry and irritated, but she was also breaking out constantly. She was juggling several prescription products from her dermatologist, adding new acne products she’d find online, and getting two HydraFacials every single month, on top of everything else.

When we actually looked at her skin, the picture became clear: her skin barrier was badly damaged. All that “doing more” had backfired. So instead of jumping straight to laser treatments, we told her something she wasn’t expecting — simplify.

We kept what was actually helping, cut what was causing irritation, layered in a few nourishing products, and pulled way back on her facial schedule. Instead of two HydraFacials a month, we alternated in healing, hydrating facials instead.

She wasn’t convinced. She left that first visit without booking anything.

A few months later, she came back, ready to actually try it.

Within a month, her skin was visibly calmer. Over the following months, it kept getting stronger and healthier. Only once her barrier had fully recovered did we move forward with a series of AviClear treatments to finish off the remaining acne.

Her skin is still improving today, and honestly, that story is one of our favorites to tell — because it’s proof that the answer isn’t always “more.”

What People Get Wrong About Medspas

A lot of people walk into their first medspa visit bracing for a sales pitch, expecting to be talked into treatments and products they didn’t ask for. That fear exists for a reason. It’s happened to people before, and we understand why it sticks.

Our rule at Collab Medspa is simple: education comes before recommendation, every time. If we suggest something, we’ll tell you exactly why we think it’ll help, and we’ll answer every question until you actually feel confident in the decision — not just agreeable to it.

Sometimes that means recommending less than a client expected. Sometimes it means telling someone to wait. We’re not measuring success by how much we sell — we’re measuring it by whether you actually reach your goals safely.

How to Choose the Right Medspa

If you’re weighing your options, here’s what we’d tell a friend to look for.

You should feel genuinely comfortable. Your consultation is really the start of an ongoing relationship, and if you don’t feel heard from the first conversation, that’s worth paying attention to. It may take a visit or two to develop a relationship, we are just saying, listen to your gut here.

Ask about medical oversight. A reputable medspa will be upfront about its licensing, insurance, and medical director; no hesitation, no vague answers. If a provider gets cagey when you ask, take that seriously.

Check that the equipment is legitimate. Not every aesthetic device on the market is what it claims to be, and some facilities cut corners with imitation equipment that isn’t approved or backed by the actual manufacturer. We only invest in devices we’d trust on our own skin – full stop.

Pricing should never surprise you. You should know your full treatment plan, the cost, and your payment options before you ever start. That’s also why we offer memberships, CareCredit, and Cherry financing – advanced skincare shouldn’t be out of reach.

It’s About More Than Just Better Skin

Yes, we want your skin to get healthier. That’s the whole point.

But that’s only part of what we’re actually after.

We want you to leave every appointment feeling heard, feeling cared for, and feeling confident — because you finally have real answers and a plan that makes sense for you. And when you do reach your goals, we hope you look back and remember we were part of that journey with you.

We say it a lot around here: your win is our win. It’s not just something we put on a wall — it’s genuinely why we do this.
