If you live in Scottsdale, you already know the Arizona sun is no joke. Between intense UV rays, dry air, and the everyday wear and tear our skin goes through, keeping a healthy glow can feel like a full-time job.
But one simple product can make a bigger difference than you might expect: vitamin C. It’s one of the most underrated heroes in skincare, and here at Collab Medspa in Scottsdale, Arizona, it’s one of our favorite ingredients to recommend. Vitamin C can brighten your skin, improve uneven tone, and soften the look of fine lines, all while helping protect against damage from free radicals.
That said, not all vitamin C serums are created equal. Let’s walk through what vitamin C actually does, how to choose a good serum, and why we think it deserves a spot in your morning routine.
What Does Vitamin C Do for Your Skin?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, which means it helps protect your skin from free radicals. These unstable molecules come from sunlight, pollution, and other environmental stress, and they can damage skin cells and speed up the signs of aging.
Here in Arizona, sun exposure is a major concern. Even if you’re not spending the day by the pool, your skin picks up UV rays during everything from the morning commute to a quick errand. That’s one big reason we love vitamin C so much. Used consistently, a quality serum can help your skin look brighter, smoother, and healthier.
Vitamin C Helps Brighten Dull Skin
Brighter-looking skin is usually the first thing people notice. Vitamin C helps even out your tone and can reduce the appearance of dark spots over time, so if your complexion looks tired or dull, it may be exactly what your routine is missing.
Vitamin C Helps Improve Sun Damage and Dark Spots
Living in Scottsdale means sunshine almost year-round, and unfortunately that can bring brown spots, uneven pigmentation, and early signs of aging. Vitamin C can help reduce the appearance of existing discoloration and protect against some of the damage free radicals cause.
It doesn’t replace sunscreen, though. We’ll get to that in a minute.
Vitamin C Supports Collagen and Healthy Aging
As we age, our skin naturally makes less collagen, the protein that keeps it firm, smooth, and youthful-looking. Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen production, so with regular use it can help improve the look of fine lines and support firmer-looking skin. That’s why it’s a go-to for clients who want to age gracefully.
Vitamin C Can Help Improve the Appearance of Acne Scars
Vitamin C can also help when you’re working on acne scars and uneven tone. It won’t erase deep or indented scars on its own, but it can support your routine while professional treatments address texture and scarring.
This one is personal to me.
My Personal Experience With Vitamin C and Acne Scarring
I know firsthand how frustrating acne and acne scars can be. During my own acne journey, I used iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ as part of my routine. Once my AviClear treatments finished, my breakouts finally settled down, but I was left with years of scarring.
At that point, my goals shifted. I wasn’t worried about active breakouts anymore. I wanted to improve the look of my scars and my overall skin texture. Over the next six months, I completed a series of VI Peels and microneedling treatments, and I switched to iS Clinical Super Serum Advance+ for my daily routine. It paired beautifully with my treatment plan: the professional treatments tackled my concerns, and my at-home routine supported the results.
I still use Super Serum today. These days my focus is healthy aging and maintaining the progress I’ve made, which brings me to something I tell clients all the time.
Your skincare should change as your skin changes. What worked during a breakout may not be what you need once your skin has cleared.
Real Results: How Vitamin C Helped One of Our Scottsdale Clients
One of my favorite examples is a client who was preparing for her son’s wedding. She wanted her skin to look its best for the big day, and her main concerns were sun damage, uneven texture, and general signs of aging.
We built a treatment plan around microneedling and paired it with an iS Clinical routine that included Pro-Heal Serum. Over time, she noticed beautiful improvements. Once she was happy with her progress, we moved her from Pro-Heal to Super Serum Advance+ to focus on aging concerns and long-term maintenance. By the time the wedding arrived, her skin looked radiant.
What I love about her story is that we never had to keep piling on products. We simply adjusted her routine as her skin improved. That’s how we approach skincare at Collab Medspa: we look at what your skin needs right now and how to help you maintain your results.
How to Choose a Good Vitamin C Serum
Here’s something many people don’t realize. Just because a label says “vitamin C” doesn’t mean the product will deliver the results you’re hoping for. The formula matters. When I’m choosing a serum with L-ascorbic acid, the form of vitamin C we often look for, I pay attention to a few key details.
Look for L-Ascorbic Acid
L-ascorbic acid is one of the most studied forms of vitamin C in skincare, known for its antioxidant benefits and its role in supporting collagen. For traditional L-ascorbic acid formulas, a low pH helps the ingredient absorb into the skin, and a pH below 3.5 is a common target. Other forms of vitamin C may use different formulas and pH levels.
Pay Attention to the Concentration
For many L-ascorbic acid serums, a concentration between 10% and 20% is a useful range. Both of our popular iS Clinical vitamin C serums contain 15% L-ascorbic acid.
A higher percentage doesn’t always mean better results, though. A well-made formula your skin can tolerate is worth far more than a strong product that leaves it irritated.
Packaging Matters, Too
Vitamin C can break down when it’s exposed to light, air, and heat, so protective packaging is important. We look for dark or tinted bottles that block light, and a well-designed container can also limit air exposure. Along with proper storage and a stable formula, good packaging helps keep your vitamin C effective.
iS Clinical Pro-Heal vs. Super Serum vs. GeneXC: What’s the Difference?
At Collab Medspa, three of our most popular vitamin C products are iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ and iS Clinical Super Serum Advance+, plus iS Clinical GeneXC Serum. We love all three, but we recommend them for different reasons.
iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+
Pro-Heal is a favorite for clients dealing with redness, acne-prone skin, or visible sun damage. It contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, along with vitamin E, vitamin A, olive leaf extract, and zinc sulfate. We often choose it when skin looks irritated or stressed. It’s also the serum I used during my own acne journey.
iS Clinical Super Serum Advance+
Super Serum is a favorite for clients focused on signs of aging, uneven tone, and the appearance of scars. It also contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, and its formula adds copper tripeptide-1, centella asiatica, arbutin, and mushroom extract. We often recommend it for clients who want smoother, brighter, more youthful-looking skin, and it’s the one I still use in my own routine.
iS Clinical GeneXC Serum
GeneXC is the most concentrated of the three, with 20% L-ascorbic acid. Beyond the vitamin C itself, the formula is built around iS Clinical’s proprietary Extremozymes®, a blend of enzymes designed to help protect skin from environmental stress, along with antioxidants and fruit acids. It also contains superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant enzyme that helps protect against the visible effects of sun damage.
The brand positions GeneXC for fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven tone, and says it supports collagen and elastin production. iS Clinical also reports that in a gene-expression study, skin exposed to GeneXC showed increased antioxidant protection, better hydration, and stronger barrier function.
Because it’s the highest concentration of the three, it’s worth checking with your provider to see whether it’s a good fit for your skin, especially if vitamin C has irritated you in the past.
What About Sensitive Skin?
I really appreciate the care iS Clinical puts into formulas that many clients find comfortable to use. We often hear, “I can’t use vitamin C because it irritates my skin.” Here’s what I want people to know.
Just because one vitamin C serum irritated your skin doesn’t mean every vitamin C serum will. Sometimes you just haven’t found the right formula.
Of course, even a well-formulated product can cause irritation for some people, which is why it’s so important to choose skincare based on your individual skin type.
Do You Still Need Sunscreen If You Use Vitamin C?
Absolutely! In fact, vitamin C and SPF are a power duo.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear. Because vitamin C helps protect skin from environmental damage, some people assume they can skip sunscreen. They can’t. Vitamin C helps fight the free radicals created by UV exposure, while sunscreen helps block harmful UV rays in the first place. The two work together, but they do different jobs. Vitamin C is not a replacement for SPF, and it doesn’t provide a measurable SPF rating.
Here in Scottsdale, I consider sunscreen a non-negotiable part of the morning routine. For daily protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply when you’re outdoors.
How to Use Vitamin C in Your Morning Skincare Routine
Vitamin C doesn’t have to make your routine complicated. At Collab Medspa, we typically recommend applying it in the morning on clean skin. Here’s the simple routine we love:
Step 1: Cleanse your skin. Start with a gentle cleanser to remove oil, dirt, and buildup.
Step 2: Apply your vitamin C serum. Choose Pro-Heal or Super Serum based on your skin’s needs.
Step 3: Apply iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum. This adds hydration and leaves skin feeling refreshed.
Step 4: Use your moisturizer. It locks in hydration and supports your skin barrier.
Step 5: Finish with SPF. This is especially important in the Arizona sun.
That’s it. We prefer vitamin C in the morning because it works so well alongside sunscreen, though some vitamin C products can also be used at night.
Your evening routine may look a little different. We often recommend iS Clinical Active Serum at night for clients with acne-related concerns, and for clients focused on aging, we may suggest Youth Serum or other products based on their skin’s needs. The goal isn’t to use everything. It’s to use the right products consistently.
Can Vitamin C Work With Microneedling, VI Peels, and Other Treatments?
Yes! Vitamin C can be a valuable part of a long-term plan that also includes professional treatments. At Collab Medspa, we often combine personalized home care with treatments that target specific concerns. Microneedling can improve the appearance of skin texture and certain types of acne scars, and VI Peels can address uneven tone and other surface-level concerns. Meanwhile, a quality at-home routine supports your skin between appointments.
Timing matters, though. Don’t automatically apply an active vitamin C serum right after microneedling or a chemical peel, because your skin may need time to heal. Always follow your provider’s post-treatment instructions before restarting active products.
How Long Does Vitamin C Take to Work?
We hear this one often, and the honest answer is that it depends on your skin, your goals, and the product you’re using. Some people notice a brighter look within a few weeks. Improvements in dark spots, uneven tone, and fine lines usually take longer, often eight to twelve weeks or more.
Consistency is key. Using a quality serum regularly tends to help more than constantly switching products. And if you’re dealing with deeper acne scars, significant sun damage, or other stubborn concerns, professional treatments may be needed for more noticeable results.
The Secret to Better Skin? Keep It Simple.
Here’s something I wish more people understood: skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t need a counter full of products. Sometimes having too many is part of the problem, because layering too many actives makes it easy to irritate your skin or lose track of what’s actually working.
Instead, find a professional skincare routine that fits your skin and your lifestyle, and choose products you can use consistently, morning and night. Then work with a trusted provider to decide whether treatments like microneedling, VI Peels, or other services can address your specific concerns.
At Collab Medspa, we believe great skincare should feel manageable, not overwhelming.
Keep it simple. Keep it consistent. And give your skin the time and care it deserves.
