What is CoolSculpting & How Does It Work?

Bathing suit season is right around the corner. A topic on the tip of many Scottsdale residents’ tongues is CoolSculpting. You may be wondering, “how does it work,” “is it painful,” “is it for me?” Wonder no more! Here’s the “skinny” on CoolSculpting.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is the brand name for the FDA-approved, non-invasive fat removal treatment that targets areas of the body that are particularly hard to tone with exercise and healthy eating alone. The method is called Cryolipolysis. Let’s break that down: “cryo” means cold, “lipo” means fat, and “lysis” means “destruction.” The procedure uses cold temperatures to destroy fat cells just below the surface of the skin.

How does it work?

During the CoolSculpting procedure, the area above the fatty tissue is vacuumed by your Collab MedSpa practitioner into a cooling applicator, where the fat cells freeze, causing them to crystallize and die. Your liver will naturally excrete these dead cells out of your body as waste for up to 6 months following the procedure, resulting in an overall reduction of fat by an average of 25%. Depending on the specific area to be targeted, the average length of time for most CoolSculpting procedures is around 30 minutes to one hour.

CoolSculpting can treat stubborn fat deposits in areas like:

  • Under the chin or below the jawline
  • Side (flank)
  • Bra fat
  • Back fat
  • Abdomen
  • Upper arm
  • Thigh
  • Underneath the buttocks

The best part? No damage to the skin or tissue means no downtime for sutures to heal.

Is it painful?

You may feel some minor soreness at the treatment site following the CoolSculpting procedure. Some clients say the discomfort is like what may be experienced with a mild muscle injury or following a vigorous workout. After about 5-10 minutes, the treatment area is entirely numb and there will be minimal discomfort. Many people will choose to read, watch television or nap during this time. Other common after effects reported are a prickly feeling at the contact site, mild discoloration, swelling, or itchiness.

Am I a Good Candidate?

CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment or a cure for an unhealthy lifestyle. It is more of a contouring procedure, intended for people who have stubborn fat deposits that don’t seem to budge with eating right and regular exercise alone. That being said, CoolSculpting’s success rates are very high and results are long-lasting, which make it a very popular treatment for healthy individuals interested in targeted, non-invasive fat-reduction.
