Why Is My Skin So Dry in Summer? – What’s really going on — and how to actually fix it

Woman with heart shaped moisturizer on her hand.

Dry skin in summer? Yes, it’s a real thing.

Most people assume dry skin is a winter problem, but if you live in Arizona, you already know better. The heat, the AC, the pool days — all of it can leave your skin feeling tight, flaky, and just… off. We hear about it constantly at Collab Medspa, and honestly, it makes total sense once you understand what’s happening.

The good news: it’s very fixable.

So what’s actually drying your skin out?

A few things tend to gang up on your skin during summer:

The sun and heat work together to pull moisture out of your skin and, over time, weaken your skin barrier — which is basically your skin’s ability to hold hydration in the first place.

Air conditioning is a sneaky one. We basically live indoors during an Arizona summer, and all that recycled, dry air slowly zaps moisture from your face and body without you even realizing it.

Chlorine is rough on skin. Pool time is great; the aftermath, not so much. That post-swim tightness and itch? That’s your skin barrier telling you it took a hit.

And just to be clear — this isn’t just a face thing. Dry summer skin shows up on your arms, legs, chest, hands, back… anywhere.

A couple of myths worth busting

“I just need to drink more water.”

Hydration matters, but it’s not the whole story. If your skin barrier is already compromised, water isn’t going to stay where it needs to. You have to heal the barrier first — then your skin can actually hold onto moisture.

“I should exfoliate more if my skin is flaky.”

This is probably the most common mistake we see. When skin looks flaky, the instinct is to scrub it away. But flakiness often means your skin is already stressed — and more exfoliation just makes things worse. What it usually needs is a break, some calming ingredients, and a little TLC.

How we approach it

We’re not going to tell you to throw out your whole routine and start over. Usually it’s just about making a few smart adjustments for the season.

We’ll take a look at what your skin is doing, what products you’re already using, and figure out what to tweak. For a lot of clients, that means:

  • Putting the harsher active products on pause for a bit
  • Switching to a richer, more healing moisturizer
  • Being consistent with sunscreen
  • Getting regular facials to stay ahead of things
  • Skipping the random TikTok skincare hauls

Products we love for dry skin

When skin is dry or irritated, we lean into barrier-supporting formulas.

iS Clinical Sheald was designed for post-procedure healing, but it’s honestly one of our favorite everyday moisturizers for dry skin types. It’s that good.

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum helps calm inflammation and gives your skin a buffer against environmental stress. Just make sure you’re pairing it with sunscreen.

Speaking of which — Neova Silc Sheer is our go-to for daily UV protection. It’s lightweight, wears beautifully, and includes DNA repair technology to help address sun damage already in progress.

Eminence Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer is a rich, nourishing option packed with antioxidants. It helps replenish moisture while supporting the skin’s natural firmness — a great pick if your skin is feeling depleted and needs something a little more substantial.

Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Concentrate is our go-to recommendation if you prefer something lighter. It delivers a burst of hydration without any heaviness, making it perfect for summer when you want your skin quenched but not weighed down.

Treatments that actually help

If you’re dealing with dry or dull skin, facials are one of the best tools we have.

Our Signature Facial is customized to your skin and always centered around hydration and healing — not just a one-size-fits-all experience.

A HydraFacial is another great option, especially when your skin needs a deeper reset. It clears out congestion while flooding the skin with hydration at the same time.

We also love adding a HydroJelly Mask to treatments when skin needs extra calming — it cools things down and seals in all the goodness from the products underneath.

One more thing: be careful with DIY oils

Coconut oil, olive oil, that random beef tallow oil blend you saw on Instagram — they seem harmless, but a lot of them can clog pores or irritate already-sensitive skin. If your skin needs an oil, we’ll help you find one that’s actually formulated for your skin type.

You Don’t Have to Live Like This!

Dry summer skin is super common in Arizona, but it doesn’t have to be your normal. A little consistency, the right products, and a solid seasonal routine can make a huge difference — and we’re here to help you figure out exactly what that looks like for your skin.
