When Is the Best Time to Start Laser Hair Removal?
If you’ve been thinking about laser hair removal, you’ve probably wondered: when should I actually start? The short answer — the best time to start is whenever you’re ready to commit to the full series. Here’s what that means and why timing matters.
Rewards of Starting Laser Hair Removal in Winter
Give Yourself 6–8 Months
Laser hair removal isn’t a one-and-done treatment — it’s a series of sessions spaced out over several months. Most clients need anywhere from 6 to 8 sessions (sometimes more, depending on your hair and skin), and those sessions are typically scheduled 4–8 weeks apart.
That means if you want to be hair-free and confident for a big event, a vacation, or just next summer in general — plan ahead. We recommend giving yourself at least 6–8 months to complete your series and see your best results.
Why Sun Exposure Matters
One of the most important things to know about laser hair removal is that sun exposure — both before and after your sessions — can affect your results and your skin’s safety. Tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive and can increase the risk of irritation. That’s why many people choose to start their series in the fall or winter. Not all, but many of our clients spend less time in the direct sun in fall or winter. By the time warmer months roll around, they’re wrapping up their sessions and enjoying smooth skin just in time for shorts and swimsuit season. But honestly, any time of year works — as long as you’re mindful about sun protection and follow the aftercare guidance we’ll give you.
What About My Skin Tone and Hair Color?
Great question — and this is something we always talk through during your free consultation. We use the Alma Soprano Ice laser hair removal machine. It is designed to safely treat all skin types and a wider range of hair colors than many traditional lasers.
Here’s how it works: the laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. So a few things can affect how many sessions you’ll need:
Darker skin tones with dark hair: We treat at a lower setting to keep your skin safe, which means it may take a few extra sessions to achieve optimal results.
Lighter skin tones with lighter hair: The laser has to work a little harder to detect the follicle, so more sessions may be needed here too.
Gray or white hair: Unfortunately, laser hair removal isn’t effective for gray or white hair, since there’s no pigment for the laser to target.
We’ll always be upfront about what you can realistically expect so there are no surprises along the way.
Have a Big Event Coming Up?
This is honestly one of our favorite reasons people come in — and one of the best motivators to finally get started. Is there something on the horizon where you want to feel your most confident and free? Think about it: a beach vacation where you just want to show up and enjoy yourself, a wedding where the last thing on your mind should be a razor, a honeymoon, a milestone birthday, a reunion, a trip you’ve been looking forward to — whatever it is, that vision of yourself feeling carefree and confident is the perfect starting point. Work backward from your event date, give yourself that 6–8 month window, and you’ll be in great shape. Not sure if the timing works out? Bring it up at your consultation and we’ll figure it out together.
We’ll Build a Plan Together
Every person’s hair growth is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. That’s why we start with a free consultation. We’ll look at your skin tone, hair color and texture, and the areas you want treated and a time frame based on your schedule. Then, we’ll map out a realistic plan and timeline just for you.
Our goal is to make sure you feel informed and confident before your first session ever begins.
